Cultivating Hops in Ohio
February 8, 2014
Starting Time: 11:00 AM
Ending Time: 12:30 PM
Brad R. Bergefurd, MS is a Researcher, Educator, Grower at Ohio State University. He helps develop the market of fine Ohio grown hops & malting barley for the growing home brewing & microbrewing industry.
Brad’s seminar at Brew Monkeys will focus on cultivation of hops in Ohio & inform those who attend of new developments in the Ohio Hop Use & Cultivation Industry.
Spurred on by the demands of a burgeoning craft brewing industry & a strong public interest in locally grown ingredients, OSU researchers are experimenting with hops (Humulus lupulus) as an alternative agriculture enterprise for Ohio agriculture. Ohio microbreweries send an estimated $4 million out of Ohio annually by purchasing the flowers of the hop plant, called hop cones, or “hops,” from growers outside the state. To help keep some of that economic activity within the state, thanks to a recently awarded USDA/ODA Specialty Crop Block Grant, Ohio State University is conducting a hop research program.
